Pipe Straps

Pipe straps, also known as pipe clamps or tube straps, are very useful devices in pipework, typically made out of sturdy steel so that they are long lasting and durable. They are attached directly to piping and tubing — whether it is horizontal or vertical — and provide structural support by securing the pipes to a solid surface. As pipes vary, so do your options. As standard parts for plumbing, pipe straps have multiple uses. They are not just practical — they are necessary. In general, pipe straps are used to support your piping and to eliminate noise. You want your pipes anchored to reduce the strain exerted on your piping through gravity and water pressure. Pipes and tubes that run along a wall or ceiling must be well-secured to prevent damage to the pipes and to make the pipes themselves less of a hazard. Support your piping with pipe straps to prevent movement and vibrations that could cause your pipe system to fall apart. As mentioned above, pipe straps can go a long way toward reducing noise. Changes in temperature can result in pipes that creak and groan, and part of the problem could be that the pipes are not properly secured. As the pipes expand and contract with the fluctuating water temperature, the pipes will rub against floor joists and make noise. The more pipe straps you install, the more snugly the pipes will fit into place and reduce the chatter that can occur naturally. A good rule of thumb is to add one pipe strap per joist. You can also apply them wherever you experience the most sound. And remember to secure them with screws instead of nails, as nails can loosen over time and bring back the noise.

As you make your selection, you should understand the basics of what is available. You have several options for pipe size, for example. Pipe straps come in a wide range of sizes to fit various pipes. They are available as small as ½-inch or as wide as 6-inch. Use a size that will allow you to snugly secure the pipe into the strap to keep it from rattling and clanging. In terms of pipe strap materials, we carry sturdy steel pipe straps with a PVC coating. And then there are clamp back spacers. These are a way to keep pipes from directly touching a mounting surface, giving space for airflow. When used with pipe straps, clamp back spacers can add support and significantly reduce the clatter of pipes. Like pipe straps, clamp back spacers are available in a range of sizes and are made from the same reliable materials.

Pipe straps are generally a very economical purchase and give you a secure, noise-free piping system. In addition to installing pipe straps in new plumbing work, you should replace older pipe straps to ensure the integrity of your piping.
