Butterfly Valves are used in applications to isolate or regulate flow and its operation is similar to a ball valve to allow for quick shut off. A butterfly valve is often chosen because of its lower cost and lighter weight. Butterfly valves are made up of four main components, a body, disk, stem and seat. A disk performs the closing mechanism on the valve and is positioned in the center of the pipe with a rod passing through it is connected to the actuator on the outside of the valve. The actuator can be rotated to turn the disc to be either parallel or perpendicular to the flow, so a drop in pressure can be avoided. Butterfly Valves are available in actuated or manual versions, and different types of butterfly valves are available to adapt to different levels of pressure and usage levels.

The resilient butterfly valve uses rubber for low pressure applications. The high performance butterfly valve is used for higher pressure applications where the position of the disc is slightly offset to increase the sealing ability and lower its wear on the disc. The triple offset butterfly value is made for high pressure systems and is constructed with a metal seat to be able to handle greater amounts of pressure. Applications that use butterfly values are in water treatment, swimming pools, aquariums, automotive, power plants, shipbuilding, ultrapure and hot ultrapure DI Water, and in process cooling.
