Anyone familiar with PVC pipe understands why it’s used in so many applications worldwide. PVC is a thermoplastic that is surprisingly strong and rigid. This material is especially perfect for piping systems as it does not rust or corrode, and it can stand up to a number of common chemicals.
If you are REALLY familiar with PVC, you probably also know that it now comes in clear form. These clear PVC pipes and fittings are harder to come by than standard white or gray PVC. Where you do find it, clear PVC is often more expensive than standard PVC of the same size and schedule.
Why? For one, clear PVC is scarcer than white or gray pipe. It also must be carefully manufactured, monitored, and packed in order to maintain the highest clarity possible. Extra care must be taken to keep it scratch-free, as the aesthetics are really the selling point. Some high end clear PVC is also manufactured to FDA approved standards.
That leads us to the next question… what is clear PVC used for? You can find clear PVC pipe systems used mostly in applications that require visual monitoring or absolute cleanliness. The clear pipe allows user in laboratories, food processing plants, and other processing applications to closely monitor what is happening inside the pipeline. Outside of the institutional and industrial uses, clear PVC is also becoming popular for use in special projects by consumers. These may include everything from fish tank setups to invention prototypes.
Last, let’s cover how and where to buy clear PVC pipe. The most reliable source for high quality clear PVC is a trusted industrial supply distributor. These companies have close relationships with manufacturers and will usually cut you the best deal. You can take your chances on smaller dealers who may have better prices, but the quality of the PVC may be pretty bad. For instance, lots of PVC that is advertised as being “clear” really has a deep blue tint, making it nearly impossible to get a visual inside the pipe. Do your research before you buy and ask about the color. All clear PVC will have a slight blue tint, so be aware of that.
Other than that, clear PVC is sold very similarly to standard PVC pipe and fittings. You may find a less abundant selection of fitting sizes. If you are in a pinch for a certain part, rest assured clear PVC is compatible with standard white and gray PVC as well. It comes in schedule 40 and 80, but is most commonly sold in schedule 40 thickness. Like most PVC, clear pipe and fittings have a maximum operating temperature of 140 degrees Fahrenheit. It has nearly identical specs as standard PVC and can be used in most applications where standard PVC is used.
