We get a lot of calls from people looking to buy PVC pipe without those black or red manufacturer markings on them. Usually, PVC pipe has printing along the length of it to mark the size, brand, schedule, and pressure rating of the pipe. For some applications this print may be unsightly, and plain, unmarked pipe is desirable. There are a couple different options for buyers looking to buy PVC pipe without printing.
Option 1: Furniture Grade PVC Pipe
PVC piping was initially designed for construction, plumbing, irrigation and industrial type uses. Today, people use PVC pipe and fittings for all sorts of other uses, like making furniture or creating the prototype for an invention. The fact that PVC is so easy to find and cheap to purchase makes it a popular choice for a range of non-plumbing uses. Due to the popularity of other PVC uses, some companies began manufacturing a special type of PVC pipe and fittings called “furniture grade”. Furniture grade PVC is a bright white color with a glossy unmarked finish.

For some buyers seeking pipe without printing this is a great option. There are some positives and negatives to furniture grade pipe. For one, the shiny white surface is much nicer to look at than standard schedule 40 white PVC pipe which is usually a dull white and sometimes has scuffing. It even is available in other colors like black, red, and green. It is also available in small lengths (usually 5 feet). This is great for recreational users who don’t want to buy a huge amount.
One of the negatives of furniture grade PVC is that it isn’t rated for pressurized use. That means it should only be used for structural applications like building a PVC pool chair or elevated dog bed. It also is more expensive than standard PVC pipe like DWV or schedule 40.
Option 2: A Custom Run From the Manufacturer
If you need something for pressurized use, or you need a large amount of pipe, some manufacturers will do a custom run of unmarked pipe just for your order. In this case the manufacturer (like Spears or Charlotte Pipe) will manufacturer your pipe to order and leave off the printing. This option means your pipe will come in 20 foot sticks and will be delivered using a freight truck.
Many people who call us want something like this but aren’t ready to hear just how much pipe they would need to order for the manufacturer to consider a custom run. No, they won’t do it for a couple hundred feet of pipe. This option is only viable if you are in need of a substantial amount of PVC. It has to be worth it for the manufacturer to fire up their production line for your custom request. Because it is a special order, there may also be an upcharge on top of the standard pipe price.

How to Buy
Furniture grade unmarked pipe can be purchased online through our retail PVC store. It generally comes in five foot sections and ships via standard carrier.
If you want to go the custom run route, your best bet is to contact a pipe distributor like Commercial Industrial Supply. PVC manufacturers do not work directly with anyone but their authorized distributors. If you contact us for instance, an account manager will be able to give you a quote, place the order for you, and arrange shipment. Keep in mind the manufacturer will have to make the PVC pipe to order, so allow for extra time. Rushing the order and shipment will increase your costs significantly, and you could end up out of luck if you don’t allow enough time.
