How does a ball valve work? This valve gets its name from its unique design. There actually is a ball in the center of the valve. This ball is responsible for controlling flow by turning to expose an opening in the ball or turning to close off the opening and thus shut off flow. On our metal ball valves there is a handle that manually controls this on/off function. A ring called a seat or seal is used on each end of the ball to create a watertight seal between the ball and valve body. These seals can be made of a few different materials. Most commonly seals are made of EPDM or PTFE material. Our metal ball valves have seats made of RTFE. This stands for reinforced Teflon, a strong material that is compounded with fiberglass to create a corrosion and abrasion resistant seal. Ball valves are used across all sorts of applications - from backyard pools to industrial chemical plants. We have ball valves of all materials available.
