4 Must Haves for Your Contractor Website

4 Must Haves for Your Contractor Website

Mark Ligon |

Are you a contractor trying to tap into the vast client pool the internet has to offer? You’re not alone! Having a website is almost a must for working contractors these days, especially if your business depends on a steady stream of new clients.

As a web manager, I see the day-in-day-out impact having an effective website can have on your business. To set your site apart from the majority, stick to a few basic principles that will serve you well as you seek to drum up business online. Here are my top 4 must haves for contractors online:

1. Spell out what you do.

This sounds simple, and it is. You’d be amazed how many websites shed absolutely no light on what purpose the business or organization serves. Be sure to include your business name, what part of the state/country/world you serve, and exactly what it is you specialize in. If you are a general contractor, say so. Make sure these three things are prominent on every page of the website. It’s best to put it in the header (top section) of the site.

2. Make it easy for people to contact you.

Once visitors see that you offer the services they need they will be looking for a way to contact you. Make this as easy as possible for them. Include your phone number and email address on every page, and create a “Contact Us” page that is easy to find on the site. On this page you can include a contact form that allows visitors to submit a comment or request, but you should also include your phone number, email address, and any other pertinent information on this page. Some people will be comfortable submitting a contact form, while others will insist on calling. Be open to any means they want to reach you.

3. Include customer reviews of your work.

Reviews and testimonials are one of the best ways to build trust in your business and your website. Create a reviews/testimonials page and put up as many reviews as you have available. If you need to, hit up a few past clients for a short testimonial. Include the client’s name or business name and the nature of the job. If possible include a picture of the job or client as well. All of this goes towards making your business look legitimate and reliable.

4. Show potential clients you’re active online.

I’m always hesitant of websites that look like they were created in 2005 and never touched again. Part of gaining a potential client’s trust and confidence is in showing them you are active and working to make your business a success. Since your website may be the only contact they have with your business, you need to show your activity online. This may be in the form of a blog or even social media accounts that you update regularly. I recommend creating at least a Facebook account that is accessible from your website. This can go a long way in making your business real to a visitor and not just a figment of the webosphere.

Start with these 4 basic principals and you'll be well on your way to establishing a web presence that is relevant and helpful to your contracting business. Do you have other tips that have worked for you and your website? Share them here!
