How to Measure a Camlock Fitting – Never Re-Measure

Mark Ligon |

Camlock fittings, also known as cam and groove fittings, are great quick disconnect adapters that make connecting and disconnecting two hoses fast and easy. Female, or receiving camlock sizes, are measured by the inside diameter of the open end of the camlock. Male camlock size is determined by the outside diameter of the camlock.

Getting a Precise Measurement

Male camlock adapters are inserted into a female camlock coupler to make the connection between the two.

Male camlock sizes are referred to by their outside diameter or OD. To obtain the proper size of the adapter, you would measure from one outside edge to the other outside edge of the adapter.

Female camlock sizes are referred to by their inside diameter or ID. To obtain the proper size of the coupler, you would measure from one inside edge to the other inside edge of the coupler.

Both the OD and ID of the camlock fittings you are joining should match.

Choosing the Right Size

In order to ensure you choose the right size fitting, make sure the measurements of the camlock match the diameter of the pipe or hose that they will need to be connected to. Note that if you use a threaded camlock, it should have a slightly larger diameter than the hose.

For the most accurate measurements, we recommend using a digital caliper or electronic ruler, as a tape measure may lead to discrepancies in your measurements.

Why It’s Important to Correctly Measure Your Camlock Fitting

Using the incorrect size camlock fitting can lead to a number of otherwise avoidable issues. For starters, this can result in leaks in your pipes. It can also cause even further damage, including taking down your entire system. The necessary fixes can be time-consuming and extremely costly.

Getting the right size fitting is important to avoid causing complications in your water system. If you find yourself questioning whether the fitting is secure, evaluate it closely and immediately make any necessary changes.

Measuring Camlock Fittings

Taking the time to accurately measure your camlock fittings is very important. Make sure you buy couplers that have an inside diameter matching the concerned end of your pipe or hose and then use adapters with compatible outside diameters! How do you measure camlock fittings? As a final reminder, male camlocks are measured by their outside diameter and female camlocks are measured by their inside diameter.
