How Brass Swing Check Valves Work
A swing check valve contains a hinged disc, sometimes called a flapper or gate, mounted inside the valve body. When liquid flows in the intended direction, the pressure pushes the disc open on its hinge, allowing media to pass through with minimal turbulence or pressure loss. When flow stops or reverses, the disc swings closed under its own weight and the force of the backpressure, sealing the pipeline and preventing reverse flow. There is no handle or external operator. The valve is controlled entirely by the flow conditions inside the pipe.
Swing check valves are designed for horizontal installations where gravity assists the closing action. They are not suitable for vertical pipe runs unless a spring-assisted model is used.
Construction and Specs
Our Smith Cooper brass swing check valves, series 01739191, are built for long service life in demanding plumbing and industrial environments:
- Body: Cast brass, one-piece construction for consistent wall thickness and strength
- Disc: Forged brass for superior durability and sealing performance compared to cast discs
- End connections: Female NPT threads on both ends, IPS
- Pressure rating: 200 PSI CWP, WOG non-shock, 125 PSI WSP steam
- Certification: ANSI/NSF 61.8, drinking water system components
- Manufacturer: ISO 9001:2008 certified facility
The screwed cap design allows access to the disc and seat for inspection and maintenance without removing the valve from the pipeline.

Installation
Brass check valves install inline using female NPT threaded connections on both ends. Apply PTFE thread tape or pipe thread sealant to the male pipe threads before assembly for a leak-free joint. Install the valve in the correct flow direction, indicated by the arrow cast into the body. Swing check valves should be installed in horizontal pipe runs where gravity helps the disc close. Allow adequate clearance around the valve for future maintenance access to the screwed cap.
